Entre araucarias, de la serie bosques del sur

This work is part of a series about the Andes Mountains of Chile, which covers a large “cordilleran zone”, where forests, mountains, rivers and volcanoes coexist.

This woodcut is inspired by the native araucaria forests in southern Chile, in the Andes mountain range. They are forests found in the Parque Nacional Huerquehue, (Huerquehue: “Place of messengers”) in the mapuche language.
This species of tree is endemic to the southern part of Chile, and also to Argentina.

The Araucaria is called “Pehuén” in mapudungún, the language of the mapuche people, originally from this territory. The “Pehuén” is the sacred tree for the mapuche culture, its cosmogony is closely linked to nature.

My work explores the power of nature. I am interested in representing its monumentality as well as reveal their own fragility over time, in the face of the permanent threat of human intervention.
